Akron takes barbecue seriously enough to close downtown for it. The Rib, White and Blue festival fills Lock 3 every July around the Fourth, and the rest of the summer the appetite moves to the parks. Summit Metro Parks rents shelters at Goodyear Heights and Cascade Valley in the city, Munroe Falls and Silver Creek in Norton just outside it, and the city rents its own shelters from April through October.
Company picnics come from the same employers we feed at lunch: the hospitals along East Market, the University, the utilities and the plants. Family reunions and graduation parties fill backyards in Ellet, Firestone Park, Kenmore and Goodyear Heights, and the lake houses on the Portage Lakes host the big ones.
A shelter has no kitchen and often no power. We bring the food hot from 647 E Market Street in chafing service with the tables and linens, and we ask on the request form what the site has so nothing depends on an outlet that is not there.

Yes. Summit Metro Parks and city shelters are built for it. The food travels hot in chafing service and we bring the tables and linens. Tell us the shelter name and whether it has power and water.

How far ahead should a summer barbecue be booked?
Early. Shelters book months out and the Saturdays from Memorial Day to Labor Day fill with graduations, reunions and picnics. Two weeks is the minimum; a month or more is safer for a summer weekend.
What does barbecue catering cost per person?
It prices as a buffet, from $13 per person for a daytime spread and $15 for dinner, as floors from our request form. Ribs move the number. Give us a budget per person and we build the menu to it.
